Helix
Music

Many rock bands find success for a few years, but eventually run their course and disband, but Helix is one of those groups that keeps going strong!

The band was first formed as “The Helix Field Band” in 1974 for a battle of the bands contest in Kitchener, but they quickly shortened their name to just “Helix.” The original members were: Ron Watson, Bruce Arnold, Don Simmons, Brian Vollmer and Keith Zurbrigg.

Helix’s first gig was at Listowel High School, but they would eventually move on to bigger and better things after playing plenty of shows around Ontario.

By 1976, the original lineup had dissolved and three new members were added. Over the years, this would happen many times over.

While the band now consists of Brian Vollmer (vocals), Kaleb Duck (guitar), Fritz Hinz (drums), Daryl Gray (bass) and Brent Doerner (lead guitar), it has seen over 30 other musicians come and go from its ranks. Brian is the only original member who remains in the band today.

Helix released its first album, Breaking Loose, in 1979 and attracted some attention in the US.

In the 1980s, Helix went through a bit of a makeover and in 1983 the band was finally signed to a major record label: Capitol records. That relationship lasted until 1990.

During its 35-year career, Helix’s top hits have included “Rock you” - “Heavy metal love” - “Dream On” and “The Storm.” Helix’s most recent single (2010) is “Make ‘em dance.”

Helix has toured with some of the biggest names in rock music, such as KISS, Aerosmith, Rush, Motley Crue, Alice Cooper, Heart and Whitesnake – and they continue to play shows around the world today.
